Situated on the edge of the Poitevin Marshes, this 15th–16th-century medieval fortress—built on a site that had been strategically important since the 5th–6th centuries—controlled navigation on the Vendée River.

It was modified in the 16th century by a prominent family under the direction of Jean Morisson, the architect of the Château de Terre Neuve in Fontenay le Comte.

Listed as a historic monument (ISMH) since a decree issued in March 1977.
